Kerala's Lake of woes

The fragile wet-land ecosystems in the country, which are home to diverse fish fauna and a source of livelihood for many, are increasingly facing threat due to pollution caused mainly by industrial waste and untreated sewage. The famous backwaters of Kerala are also not immune to it. The Vembanad Lake, which is fed by six rivers and sea, is witnessing a fall in the quality of water due to unregulated growth of house boats, many of which do not follow eco-friendly norms like bio-toilets.
